In a gut-wrenching 34-27 overtime defeat to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field on Sunday, the New York Giants (2-10) squandered a 10-point-plus fourth-quarter lead for the fourth time this season, extending their season of collapses.
Trailing 27-17 entering the final frame, Detroit mounted a furious rally capped by kicker Jake Bates' 59-yard field goal as regulation expired -- his career-long and a franchise record -- tying the score at 27.
In overtime, the Lions' defense forced a Giants punt after a fourth-and-10 stop, then Jahmyr Gibbs burst 69 yards for the game-winning touchdown on the first play.
The loss, paired with Tennessee's victory, officially eliminated New York -- the NFL's first team out and their earliest playoff exit since 1976.
This marks the Giants' fifth concession of a 59-plus-yard game-tying or winning field goal in NFL history, an unwanted record.

Injury alert: TE Daniel Bellinger
On the Giants' first play of overtime, quarterback Jameis Winston threw an incomplete pass to tight end Daniel Bellinger, who suffered an injury. He was promptly helped off the field.
Bellinger quickly returned to the game.
Giants defense folds
With nose tackle Dexter Lawrence curiously on the sideline to start overtime, running back Jahmyr Gibbs took it up the gut for 69 yards untouched. One play, one touchdown.
Lions lead for the first time on Sunday.

Giants win the OT coin toss
The Giants, who sent veteran quarterback Russell Wilson out to midfield, won the overtime coin toss and opted to defer.
Lions tie it up
With a chance to make a play and win the game, the Giants' defense couldn't make it happen. They allowed a 13-play, 53-yard drive aided by a delay of game penalty on safety Jevon Holland.
That penalty cost the Giants as Detroit connected on a 59-yard field goal to tie the game -- a career-long kick for Jake Bates. It was also tied for the franchise's long.

Injury alert: CB Dru Phillips
With just under 3:00 remaining, cornerback Dru Phillips suffered an injury while making a tackle along the sideline. He was quickly ushered off the field.
Phillips later returned to the game.
Can't put it away
Following Jameis Winston's interception, the Giants forced Detroit into a three-and-out, breathing life back into the team.
However, despite a long drive and some aggressive play-calling, the Giants were unable to come away with points, as the Lions' defense stepped up and stopped them on four downs inside the 10-yard line.
The Giants were for it on a fourth down instead of taking the field goal, which gave the Lions offense more options.
Collapse continues
On the very first play of their offensive series following the Lions' touchdown, quarterback Jameis Winston tried to force a pass into wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson, and it was picked off.
10-point fourth-quarter leads are never safe with these Giants.
Giants' defense breaks again
After a huge momentum shift on Jameis Winston's receiving touchdown, Shane Bowen's defense -- in all too familiar fashion -- broke.
It took the Lions just three plays to go 81 yards, with Jahmyr Gibbs taking a handoff to the right side and cruising for a 49-yard score.

Trickery!
Interim head coach Mike Kafka is pulling out all the stops in Week 12, and the trickery was never more pronounced than early in the fourth quarter when the Giants ran a reverse to wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, who then tossed the ball left to quarterback Jameis Winston.
Winston magic followed, as he not only caught the pass, but then shook a defender en route to a 33-yard touchdown, capping off a nine-play, 85-yard drive.

Giants defense with a turnover
Break out the turnover chest!
With the Lions driving and another defensive collapse seemingly on tap, safety Jevon Holland lair out for an interception that went off the hands of Amon-Ra St. Brown. It was a momentum shift the Giants needed, and a stop even more desperately needed for the defense.
Halftime: Bowen's defense wilts
After taking a 20-14 lead with just seconds remaining in the second quarter, the Giants' special teams unit and defense wilted, first allowing a long kick return to ex-Giant Kalif Raymond before capping off a five-play, 38-yard drive with a 37-yard field goal.

Giants score before halftime
After Eric Gray, in his first game back, muffed a kickoff, the Giants' offense managed to recover and, once again aided by big plays from Wan'Dale Robinson, drove down the field before things stalled.
After gaining 56 yards on six plays, the Giants were forced to settle for a 44-yard Younghoe Koo field goal.

Gibbs shows up
Jahmyr Gibbs had been quiet for nearly two full quarters, but erupted on a three-play, 61-yard Lions scoring drive. The running back broke out for a 49-yard run and then capped things off with a three-yard touchdown reception.

Rookie continues to shine
It's a big day for rookie defensive lineman Darius Alexander, who appears to be coming into his own against the Lions. He recorded his second full sack to end another Lions drive, bringing quarterback Jared Goff down for a seven-yard loss.
Engine keeps turning
The Giants' offense continued its early domination midway through the second quarter against the Lions, driving 69 yards on six plays for another score -- this one coming on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Jameis Winston to wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins.
Hodgins, who rejoined the team last week, pulled down a high throw and managed to get both feet (and one knee) in bounds.

Injury update: Flannigan-Fowles
The Giants have downgraded linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to out with a neck injury.
Lions answer
Aided by a defensive pass interference on safety Dane Belton, the Lions offense punched back early in the second quarter, driving the ball 65 yards on seven plays. The drive was capped off with an 11-yard touchdown tunnel screen from quarterback Jared Goff to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
After the score, St. Brown broke out the salsa, made famous by Victor Cruz.

Injury alter: Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles
Giants linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles got banged up early in the second quarter and was being looked at on the sidelines before returning. After just one play, he was again down on the turf, motionless.
After a few moments, he finally got to his feet and very slowly left the field. After heading into the blue medical tent, he was listed as questionable to return to the game.
Robinson breaking out
It's the Wan'Dale Robinson show in Detroit in the first quarter. He hauled in the score on the first offensive series and several big catches on the Giants' second scoring drive, which spanned 87 yards over 10 plays, culminating in a 21-yard Younghoe Koo field goal.

Rookie sack stalls Lions
Rookie defensive lineman Darius Alexander recorded his first full career sack on a third down to stop Jared Godd and the Lions offense, forcing a punt.
Offense opens on fire
It was a big-play drive for the Giants on their first offensive series, with quarterback Jameis Winston connecting on two 20-plus-yard passes -- one to Darius Slayton and the second to Wan'Dale Robinson for a 39-yard touchdown off an outside toss flea-flicker.
The Giants went 70 yards over four plays, eating 2:04 off the clock.

Lions win the toss
The Lions won the opening coin toss and opted to defer. The Giants will start on offense, and Detroit will receive the second-half kickoff.
Winston's pregame speech
Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston broke down the team ahead of kickoff on Sunday and was animated in a very Jameis-like way.
