Two teenagers killed as speeding truck hits bike in Ghaziabad

Three bike-borne teenagers were hit by an over-speeding truck in Saidpur village of the Ghaziabad district, leaving two of them dead and one critically injured, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on the Mohiuddin Pur- Kharkhoda road under the Bhojpur police station area here on Friday night, they said.

Imran (13), a Class 5 student, died on the spot, while Vaseem (16) succumbed to his injuries during treatment at a hospital in the neighbouring Hapur district. The third boy, Samad (14), is undergoing treatment at a hospital, and his condition is stated to be critical.

Police said the three were heading to a nearby petrol pump to refuel their motorcycle when the truck hit the bike from behind and fled the spot.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Modinagar) Amit Saxena said none of the teenagers was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

He said no complaint has been filed so far as the victims' families do not want to pursue legal action. Police are checking CCTV footage from cameras installed along the road to trace the goods carrier, he added.

An FIR will be registered if a complaint is received from the victims' kin, the ACP added.

Malayalam actor-screenwriter Sreenivasan passes away at 69

Sreenivasan, one of the most influential figures in Malayalam cinema as an actor, screenwriter and director, died at a government hospital here on Saturday morning, film industry sources said. He was 69.

He had been facing health issues and had undergone heart surgery in 2022.

Sreenivasan was travelling for dialysis at a private hospital in Kochi when he developed breathing difficulties and was shifted to the Government Taluk Hospital, Tripunithura.

According to hospital authorities, he passed away at around 8.30 am.

Brazil police probe Bolsonaro allies in Congress for embezzlement

Brazilian police on Friday launched an investigation into two lawmakers and close allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro over suspected embezzlement of parliamentary funds. A Supreme Court judge ordered seven raids in connection with the probe, including searches at the homes of Sostenes Cavalcante, leader of the Liberal Party (PL) in the lower house, and Carlos Jordy, another pro-Bolsonaro lawmaker.

In a statement, police said the suspects were being investigated on suspicion of “embezzlement and subsequent concealment of public funds.”

Rubio says nothing will 'impede' sanctions enforcement in Caribbean

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday that nothing would impede US enforcement of sanctions in the Caribbean, following Washington’s announcement of a blockade on sanctioned oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela.

"There's nothing that's going to impede our ability to enforce US law when it comes to sanctions," Rubio said, as cited by AFP. "We'll have a judicial order, we'll execute on those orders."
