From 1900 he devoted himself full time to writing, giving up the editorship and writing a lot critical criticism, and likewise theatre journalism, one of his particular pursuits. In 1908 The Old Wives’ Tale was printed, and was a direct success all through the English-speaking world. His most well-known works are the Clayhanger (1910) trilogy and The Old Wives’ Tale. These books draw on his expertise of life within the Potteries, as did most of his greatest work.
